The New Rule: Ofcom Enforces Age Checks on Porn Sites
Starting 25 July 2025, major pornography sites like Pornhub, RedTube, YouPorn, and others must implement robust age verification to prevent children from accessing explicit content online.
This marks a key moment in the UK’s digital regulation under the Online Safety Act, with Ofcom now granted legal powers to fine, block, or take legal action against sites that fail to comply.
It’s a step in the right direction — but it’s not enough, as kids with no Broadband Parental Controls in homes may still access illegal sites, or other social media sites whereby pornography may still be accessible. This presents a false dawn for parents thinkin that children are safe on the internet, when it may spurn a whole set of sites that may not abide by the requirements and seek an audience that will capitalise on children accessing content. So, this is where broadband providers need to step up, and provide parental controls as tools to help parents protect their children online.
The Gaps in the Online Safety Act
While the Online Safety Act (OSA) introduces new responsibilities for platforms that host harmful content, it does not require Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to proactively filter or block pornographic content at the network level. ISPs can easily prevent this via network based parental controls that they can enforce++
That’s a problem.
The law focuses heavily on platform accountability, but what happens when:
● Pornographic material is hosted on mainstream platforms like Reddit, X (formerly Twitter), or Telegram?
● Children access unregulated foreign sites that avoid compliance?
● Kids use VPNs or private browsers to bypass filters?
● New sites pop up faster than regulators can act?
