What are the Department for Education requirements?

1. Schools and colleges should use a full-fibre connection for their broadband service

Full-fibre services provide the capacity and speed needed for effective use of online learning tools.

  • Enables teachers to make full use of online resources in teaching and learning.
  • Saves money by replacing on-site infrastructure with cloud-based solutions (e.g. VoIP telephony).

1 Gbps symmetric for secondary schools
100 Mbps down / 30 Mbps up for primary schools

Schools should also have backup broadband. Primary and backup connections must use different technologies.

Adopt Wi-Fi 6E (802.11ax) and Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be); configure for network segregation, QoS and secure guest access.

Install Category 6A copper and OM4 fibre:

  • Permanent link ≤ 90 m
  • Fire rating — BS 6701 Euroclass Cca s1b.d2.a2

Switches must offer at least 1 Gbps per port, 40 Gbps stack interconnects and 2 × 10 Gbps uplinks.

  • 512 MB memory, 16 000 MAC addresses, MST/RST support, non-blocking fabric
  • PoE to IEEE 802.3af/at/bt, LLDP-MED enabled
  • Energy-Efficient Ethernet — 802.3az
