🧒 A Harmless Book, a Dangerous Link
A safeguarding alert has been issued after parents and schools discovered that the once-trusted children’s series Spy Dog / Spy Pups and Spy Cat by Andrew Cope now contain a link to a compromised website.
The Spy Dog book domain printed in these books, was originally a fun extension of the stories — somewhere kids could “learn more about the characters.” Today, that same web address redirects to a pornographic site containing explicit adult content with no age verification.
This disturbing incident highlights a growing problem: even offline media can expose children to online harms when website domains lapse or are hijacked.
The author of the books series and the publisher provided statements for a recent BBC article, stating the serious actions being taken: Spy Dog: Children’s books pulled over explicit weblink – BBC News,
“This website is not associated with Puffin or Andrew Cope. We are asking people not to visit the website and ensure that children do not visit it either. We are taking this extremely seriously and are acting on this issue as a matter of urgency through the appropriate channels to get this website removed. This is an in-depth and complex legal process and will take time.”
⚠️ Schools Act — Parents Urged to Check at Home
Following the alert, schools nationwide have begun removing all Spy Dog, Spy Pups, and Spy Cat books from classrooms and libraries as a safety precaution.
Parents are urged to:
-
Check at home for any copies of these books, and remove the .
-
Remove them from children’s access until the issue is confirmed resolved.
-
Avoid visiting the website listed inside these books.
It’s really worrying how books meant for children, widely available in schools, can have links that contain materials which can suddenly become unsafe.
🕸️ Why This Happened — and Why Ofcom Can’t Fix It Alone
Domains can expire or be re-registered by bad actors. Once that happens, regulators such as Ofcom have no immediate power to take them down or restore them.
The truth is simple: Ofcom can’t monitor every website or every domain name change on the internet. The web evolves too quickly — thousands of safe sites become unsafe each month through hacking, redirects, or ownership changes.
That’s why Internet Service Providers (ISPs) must step up and provide network-level parental controls that block unsafe domains automatically, before a child ever reaches them.

💬 Final Thoughts
This alarming discovery shows just how fragile digital trust can be.
A harmless book has become a gateway to adult material, all because a website changed hands.
The internet doesn’t come with road signs or safety belts — so it’s time for ISPs to provide them.
Because no child should stumble across pornography from a storybook.
